What are Dentures?
Dentures are removable false teeth that fit over the gums to replace missing teeth and eliminate potential problems caused by gaps.
There are two types of Dentures:
- Complete Dentures replace all your upper and lower teeth
- Partial Dentures replace specific missing teeth
What to Expect
Your dentist will take measurements and create a mould of your mouth
Soon after that, you will recieve your dentures based off of those measurments and moulds
Caring for your Dentures
General advice about your dentures
- Wear them as your dentist has advised
- Storing dentures in a moist environment e.g. in water
- Take measures to prevent dental complications Read more about prevention
Cleaning your dentures
- Clean your dentures twice a day as with your natural teeth
- Brush your dentures with toothpaste or soap and water
- Soak your dentures for a few minutes with denture cleaning tablets
- Brush your dentures again
Eating with dentures
- When you first start wearing dentures, try to eat small, soft foods
- Avoid sticky food such as chewing gum
- Avoid hard or sharp foods
- Over time as you start getting more used to your dentures, you can gradually move back towards your previous diet
Adjustments to your Dentures
You should see your dentist if:
- Your dentures are causing discomfort
- Your dentures don't fit well or they tend to slip
- Your dentures click when talking
- Your dentures are visually worn
- You are experiencing oral complications such as gum disease Learn more about gum disease
